We got inspired by the organisation Vasaloppet, and decided to ask our co-workers who usually live in India to ski Stafettvasan (relay 90 km). Some have never seen snow before and more importantly, they have never tried cross-country skiing. They have shown a big interest for this typical Swedish challenge and throughout this fall and winter they will have a schedule filled with team meetings, ski camps and lessons in skiing techniques. You can follow the team here in their preparations.
In 1922 the first Swedish Vasaloppet was held to commemorate the 400 years anniversary of when Gustav Vasa, during his flight from the Danish king, stopped in Sälen and returned to Mora to lead the uprising against the Danish occupation forces. He became the first King of Sweden as we know it today. Sweden has been fully independent ever since. The Vasaloppet is a long distance cross-country ski race (ski marathon) included in the Worldloppet Ski Federation. The week preceeding Vasaloppet is called the "Vasaloppet week". There are 8 races held during the week. The races had 93,000 participants registered 2015. Winter week 2016 there are 65 000 participants registered in 8 races.
The IBM Diversity Race has an ambitious traning schedule. There will be serious training sessions and SATS-classes in our IBM gym, before we move to the outsides. We are hoping for snow in Stockholm, but are preparing with three ski camps, one which is in the indoor SkiDome of Göteborg. The team will have ski instructors, technique and equipment training, even learn the science of waxing skies!
